When they called New Mexico the Land of Magic, they nailed it. With stunningly raw landscapes and deep cultural heritage, this stunning state offers America’s best combination of outdoor adventure and ethnic diversity. Its star town, Santa Fe, flourished long before visitors arrived at Plymouth Rock, and it’s a taste of just how old and interesting New Mexico is.
There are many attractions surrounding the state’s amazing Native American culture. Eleven other tribes have their own lands, called pueblos, which are mostly open to interested visitors. Taos is the most impressive, but Santa Fe is a real gem, with unique Adobe architecture and an ancient town with many restaurants, shops and historic sites. Albuquerque, New Mexico’s largest city, also has attractions such as Old Town and the Sandia Peak Tramway.
What makes New Mexico so spectacular are the otherworldly red rock landscapes. By car, you can see landscapes that inspired the painter Georgia O’Keeffe in Abiquia or walk among the aspens of the Sangre de Cristos Mountains. There is excellent skiing in Taos and Santa Fe, as well as world-class mountain biking and rafting throughout the state. Best of all, you can combine the two by hiking to ancient Native American sites like the Gila Cliff Dwelling or Bandolier for an unforgettable blend of nature and culture.

The people here may not seem very friendly, but towns like Santa Fe and Taos are booming in tourism. Santa Fe has incredible five-star hotels, award-winning restaurants and spas that attract as many celebrities as regular visitors. Famous restaurants and hotels don’t come cheap, but you can always find the best, authentic New Mexican food at humble cafes anywhere.
You just can’t get the full experience without a car. You can spend days in Santa Fe, but the best scenery, cultural attractions, and outdoor recreation are just a few miles away on public transportation in New Mexico. Even if you’re just driving the back country between Santa Fe and Taos, it’s a revelation and there are plenty of rental cars at the Albuquerque airport. New Mexico is a place that has become a source of inspiration for us. After a few years in and out of Los Angeles, we felt like a home away from home.
In this guide, we’ve rounded up some of our favorite places to stay, eat, relax, explore, and learn in Santa Fe and Taos, along with a few additional spots from other parts of the state.

Travel was a big factor in developing our interest in coffee. Finding and visiting coffee shops has become a highlight of our travels since we met. Especially on short trips, stopping for a barbecue is a great way to learn about the local culture and get tips on other good places to visit.
Our guides are a way to share the places we’ve visited and enjoyed. They’re not comprehensive, but they’re meant to give you a small glimpse into the larger realm, which includes a variety of possibilities and will appeal to you in a variety of ways as you travel!

It’s such a beautiful, walkable town full of fine dining, tons of art galleries, and vintage shops that you won’t want to miss. Below is a detailed guide to all of our favorite things we did on our four-day trip.
Albuquerque Travel Guide
There are so many art galleries in Santa Fe, beautiful art everywhere you look, and below are some of my favorites. The Ryard District is dominated by contemporary art, while Canyon Road is a mixed bag. It’s fun to wander around if you have time, and don’t forget to check out the beautiful sculpture gardens and landscaping during your escapade. The locals are keen to make the area attractive and welcoming and this was one of my favorite cities for galleries!
