Being the oldest of the Canary Islands – emerging from the seabed some 22 million years ago – Fuerteventura moves at a leisurely pace. Its volcanic mountains are undulating rather than peaked and its yellow ocher landscape spills into the sea around expanses of creamy sand.

That doesn’t mean there aren’t enough exciting activities, rather, everything here shows a relaxed feel. The island is mostly desert and receives limited rain and plenty of sunshine, meaning good beach weather is guaranteed at any time of the year.

Most of the hotels are in the three coastal regions: Corralejo in the north, Caleta de Fuste in the east, and Jandía in the south, but if you go inland, there are plenty of good country hotels and guest houses for alternative stays. The whole island is a protected biosphere reserve and bird watching is popular inland, while people flock to the coast for surfing and water sports.

Whether you’re looking for high-octane adventure or a relaxing trip, with the family or an adults-only getaway, our expert has rounded up the best places to stay in Fuerteventura.

A five star, pink palace hotel is surrounded by the beach and located on the east coast of the island – perfect for a quick trip from the airport, to make the most of your time in the sun. The 266 rooms and suites are elegant with features of classic Canarian design, with deep colored pine wood and terracotta tiles. Naturally, there’s a soothing spa – all 1,000 square meters of it – for TLC, featuring treatments such as the O2 body perfection that aim to hydrate, nourish and whiten. Guests can access the nearby Fuerteventura Gold Club and there is also an on-site fitness center for active types.

The hotel’s four restaurants are a delightful mix of Spanish and Asian dining. See if you can get a table outside on the terrace at El Faro for lunch as the sun sets. Head inland from the hotel to the beautiful town of Antigua for whitewashed churches, windmills and the Majorero Cheese museum, which showcases the island’s famous hard cheese.

Relaxation at Bahía Real begins the moment you check in to any of the 242 rooms and suites, as a spacious balcony or terrace greets you. Ocean view rooms may charge a bit of a premium, but it’s worth it for the uninterrupted view of the wild, glistening Atlantic. Visit the spa with a hydrotherapy pool, sauna, steam room, sensation shower and hammam, as well as a full service salon and a range of treatments using Natura Bissé products. We love the outdoor hot tub for some soothing warmth outdoors. There are plenty of bars and restaurants to satisfy gourmet cravings, but it’s best for owners to sunbathe at Rendezvous.

Fuerteventura is a great choice for holidays with children of any age. Nowhere on the island is more than an hour from the airport, which means there are no long transfers. Near the northern end of the island is Village Club Fuerteventura, a resort that includes villas, rooms and studios in five “neighbourhoods”, which give a quiet community feel.

Kids young and old will love cooling off in the hotel’s impressive Crater Park, a 5,000 square meter water park with its own beach, wave machine, swimming pool with climbing wall, adventure slide and heated children’s pool. The resort’s children’s club offers a packed schedule for four to 11-year-olds, including sports, games, workshops, dancing and singing. There is also a games room and mini golf as well as tennis and paddle courts. If you prefer the beach to the pool, a daily shuttle bus runs from the hotel to El Cotillo and Corralejo beaches.

Although most people who visit Fuerteventura head straight for the wide sandy beach (and who can blame them?), they often overlook the beautiful interior of the island, where this hotel is located.

With just nine rooms, Hotel Rural Mahoh may be compact but it’s full of character. This beautifully renovated farmhouse has an indoor pool and is attached to a distinctive restaurant serving classic Canarian dishes such as baifo (goat) and cherne (white fish, a bit like cod), accompanied by Island wine selections Happy. Speaking of wine, visit the nearby Bodega Conatvs – the only commercial vineyard on the island – for a taste. As the center of the island is largely undeveloped, it doesn’t suffer from light pollution, meaning stargazing around the hotel is spectacular – and free.

This beach-chic boutique hotel has one of the best locations on the island, in the heart of popular Corralejo. All 18 rooms are clean, cool and in harmony with sea views from the balconies – you can see nearby Isla de Lobos and Lanzarote. On top of the roof there is a lovely terrace with swimming pool, lounges and a cafe bar, perfect for soaking up the sun and more beautiful views. From the hotel, you can walk to many seaside restaurants, beach bars and cafes, as well as Corralejo’s nightlife. Want a day out? Hop on a boat to Lanzarote or head south to the famous sand dunes of Corralejo.

Avanti Lifestyle Hotel is something of a Fuerteventura legend. It was originally opened in 1969, long before the island became the tourist paradise it is today, and was simply named “Hostal Corralejo”, as it was the only hotel in these parts. In the following years, it became a stylish boutique hotel with a highly desirable location. The 14 bedrooms are decorated in cool whites and blues with classic blue candy stripe details.

Due to its bijou status, there’s no spa (apart from a rooftop hot tub and in-room massages on request) but with the sea and sheltered beach on your doorstep, you won’t miss it. The Rompeolas (meaning breakwater) restaurant is pure Spanish, serving classic dishes using the freshest ingredients from the islands and mainland. Grab a seat on the terrace to enjoy a fun holiday atmosphere.

Luxury Holidays In Fuerteventura, Spain

Completely renovated in 2022, the Royal Level is part of the four-hotel Barceló Fuerteventura Beach Resort. It has 48 rooms that feature separate lounges, premium tea and coffee making facilities (something you don’t often find in Spanish hotel rooms), and a contemporary beach style.

Thanks to being part of a wider destination, there are plenty of options for things to do and places to eat. The Royal Level has its unique buffet restaurant and pool bar, but guests can also dine in more than six restaurants and bars, including Spanish, Mexican, Italian and Japanese cuisine. Gourmets should go to the coast to visit the famous Salinas del Carmen sea salt museum, and Verde Aurora Bio Farm, where you can taste olive oil and other products that are grown and produced locally.

When you look at the beautiful expanse of light colored sand of Jandía beach, it is not difficult to understand why Fuerteventura is often said to have the best beach in the Canary Islands. This five star hotel is located on the beachfront and features riviera chic with the feel and facilities of a beach club. Along with an extensive spa, the hotel can arrange golf at nearby clubs, diving and water sports but, again, you may want to take a walk along the water’s edge – there is direct access to the beach from the hotel. Once you’ve washed the sand off your feet, head for a drink at Fin De Siglo Bar for live music and creative mixing.
